JBLE Fort Eustis
JBLE - Fort Eustis Relocation Information

Welcome to Fort Eustis!
Joint Base Langley-Eustis (JBLE) is the consolidation of the Army's Fort Eustis and the Air Force's Langley Air Force Base. The joint base is Air Force controlled, but unlike other joint bases that share common perimeters, the two components are geographically separated by 17 miles, on the opposites of a coastal peninsula. Under the 2005 Base Realignment, Allocation and Closure (BRAC) Act, JBLE falls under the responsibility of the Air Force 633d Air Base Wing as Joint Base Langley-Eustis. The Fort Eustis section of the base is north of the Langley section in Newport News, Virginia. Fort Eustis is in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. The military presence in Hampton Roads is the largest concentration of military personnel outside the Pentagon.
Fort Eustis is home to the U.S. Army Transportation Corps, which includes the Transportation Center and School, the Aviation Logistics School, Army Training and Doctrine Command, and the Non-commissioned Officer Academy.

Felker Army Airfield is found on the western side of Fort Eustis, close to the James River. It is the third busiest airfield in the U.S. Army. An estimated 135,000 movements are recorded annually.

Initially named Camp Eustis, Fort Eustis was the result of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Act, but the fort has historic ties dating back to early colony settlers and Native Americans via what was known then and now as Mulberry Island
Fort Eustis veterans assisted with key operations during World War I, as Army leadership determined highly trained heavy artillery soldiers were needed to proceed with the war effort. This training was headquartered at Fort Monroe, Virginia, as the Coast Artillery, but Mulberry Island was later established as the camp for advanced training.
Fort Eustis was named for MG Eustis who valiantly fought during the War of 1812 in addition to the Seminole Wars. Later, he was the commander of the School of Artillery Practice at Fort Monroe from 1824-1834.

Base Location and Information
Follow the Eastern Seaboard 200 miles south from Washington D.C., and you’ll land in the metropolitan area of Hampton Roads, Virginia. In the coastal plains of the Tidewater region you’ll find seven bustling cities: Norfolk, Newport News, Hampton, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach.
This area is brimming with nautical history, and if you're anticipating a PCS move to Fort Eustis, you’ll feel right at home with the military-friendly vibe of this expansive area. Military bases in Hampton Roads are either located “Southside” in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area or “on the peninsula” across the waterway. Fort Eustis is “on the peninsula.”

Although Fort Eustis and Langley AFB stand physically apart, newcomers are often initially confused by the joint base nomenclature. Fort Eustis is in Newport News which is near the James River, while Langley AFB is 17 miles south, in Hampton.
The dominance of waterways poses an intense traffic situation dictated by the The Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (HRBT) system. Fort Eustis lies north of many military bases in the region that require bridge and tunnel commute, so everyday back ups may be avoided by living very close to base, but recreational or shopping adventures will be affected by the prevalence of traffic back ups.
When heading to the southern side of Hampton Roads (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, etc. ), you’ll encounter the routine use of a four-tunnel system and the routine traffic headaches that people endure in the area. This map from Military Town Advisor will make clear your best routes and detail traffic congestion sites and times.
With the tunnels comes tariffs, and daily commutes add to the budget that has to be considered when choosing your new home. Specifically, the City of Portsmouth earns money from the use of the Downtown and Midtown Tunnels connecting Portsmouth and Norfolk. Here you can expect to either purchase an EZ Pass or receive an electronic bill at your house. However, the only other tunnel option that requires a toll is the privately owned Chesapeake Bay Bridge which connects Virginia Beach to the Eastern Shore.

Off base, you’ll find plenty of military neighbors on the peninsula. The Army and Air Force make up the majority, but all branches are represented in Hampton Roads in one way or another, with the huge Norfolk Naval Base just across the water.
Fort Eustis is a very easy commute to Newport News--normally within 10 to 15 minutes. The city can be challenging when seeking comfortable neighborhoods and schools, but military members have reviewed and enjoyed the Carriage Hills and Courtney Trace neighborhoods. On the peninsula, housing tends to be most affordable near Fort Eustis.
Military families also look into nearby cities such as Williamsburg or Yorktown that offer more housing options, including plenty of homes with colonial style architecture. However, the colonial charm and amenities in these cities tend to bump up price points of off base housing.
Further south in Poquoson, the neighborhood population enjoys privacy and larger land lots that pair with longer commute times. Keep in mind, to avoid daily traffic tie ups, it's easiest to live and work on the peninsula instead of commuting across a bridge or tunnel down to the Southside.

Support for Military and Families

Fort Eustis is a smaller installation, but it does have support offices on base, including Army Community Service. Don’t forget that Langley is less than 20 miles away, and may have more opportunities for your situation. And, if need be, heading to the Southside to use any of the larger installation’s support systems is always an option.
