Welcome to Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story!

“The Pearl by the Bay and the Emerald on The Ocean”—that’s a pretty great tagline for a military base! It’s also a big clue about how closely connected Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story’s past and future are to nearby bodies of water.

For those stationed at JEB Little Creek-Fort Story, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, the ocean is always calling, and so is the Chesapeake Bay. With so many water and beach activities and events available at a moment’s notice, it won’t take military families long to settle in and take advantage of what the Hampton Roads region has to offer.

Don’t be confused; JEB Little Creek-Fort Story is of one command, but it’s split between Fort Story (a former Army base) and Little Creek properties. It is the country’s premier installation for housing and training the nation’s Expeditionary Forces.

Nearby military installations:

Just like the entire Hampton Roads region, Fort Story has a significant position in America’s past, dating to the earliest settlers in 1607. Both Fort Story and Little Creek played substantial roles during WWII, specifically to care for wounded soldiers. Later, it became a series of training grounds for amphibious forces. In October 2009, JEB Little Creek-Fort Story was officially established. Today, 18 large ships and a different mix of 126 smaller craft call the base home.

JEB Little Creek-Fort Story employs more than 18,000 military and civilian personnel. It is the largest military employer in Virginia Beach. The base is extensive, covering nearly 4,000 acres with 7.6 miles of beachfront.

The Virginia Beach area is a busy mix of military and civilian life. The shore is a statewide vacation destination, and tourism is a significant contributor to the economy. Locals learn to embrace the distant travelers and vacationers who arrive from other parts of the historic Hampton Roads region. Williamsburg, in particular, is a huge draw. America’s colonial roots stem from the entire area, and this influence is felt throughout the military and nonmilitary communities.
