The North End is the oldest neighborhood in Boston, with historic Italian American charm. It also has one of the highest costs of living in the area, partly due to a high residential density with limited space. Parking, commuting, and housing may be more challenging and more expensive than a typical suburban base might be.

If service members and their families want quieter neighborhoods, big yards, or larger homes, they may need to look just outside the North End into nearby neighborhoods and suburbs.
