Located in Florida’s panhandle, Pensacola offers white sandy beaches, scenic hiking trails, and a variety of attractions, including downtown Pensacola, The Fish House, and McGuire’s. Known as the “Cradle of Naval Aviation,” the city has a rich history in training naval aviators, a tradition that continues today. Visitors can explore the Naval Aviation Museum, and it’s common to hear aircraft overhead, including the Blue Angels during practice flights. The combination of natural beauty and aviation heritage makes Pensacola a unique destination year-round.

Most operations, the golf course, military housing, the Navy Gateway and Inns, the Navy Lodge, and exchange are located on NAS Pensacola. However, Corry Station is separate. It’s located a few miles outside of the main gate. Corry Station houses the Pensacola Naval Hospital, more military housing, a second CDC, commissary, and a comprehensive base exchange offering home goods, appliances, and electronics.

There are several housing options for service members near NAS Pensacola. Pensacola Beach, about 30 to 60 minutes south of the base, is primarily made up of vacation rentals. Most military families relocating to the area choose to live in Pensacola itself. Nearby towns like Pace and Milton offer more space, but the longer commute to the base can be a drawback. Within Pensacola, housing is available near the main gate along Navy Boulevard, as well as near the west gate along Blue Angel Parkway, which tends to be less congested.

Frequently Asked Questions About NAS Pensacola

1) What role did NAS Pensacola play during the World Wars?

NAS Pensacola became the hub of naval aviation training during World War I. It grew from 38 naval aviators to 1,000 in a few short years. After the first World War, as demand slowed, so did the training, and the base was used to complete 100 graduations a year (mostly Annapolis graduates, hence the base’s nickname "Annapolis of the Air"). As World War II approached, NAS Pensacola became the hub for naval aviation. The rate at which it grew and produced pilots for the war prompted Senator Owen Brewster’s comment, “The growth of naval aviation during World War II is one of the wonders of the modern world.”

2) Is NAS Pensacola open to the public?

Yes, NAS Pensacola is open to the public. Home to the Naval Aviation Museum, Fort Barrancas, and the Pensacola Lighthouse, the base attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists a year. However, unsponsored visitors without a DoD identification card must use the West Gate located on the Blue Angel Parkway.

3) What is Pensacola known for?

Pensacola is known as the "City of Five Flags." The Spanish, French, British, Confederate, and American flags have all had their turn.

4) Is Pensacola a military town?

It depends on the definition of “military town.” While NAS Pensacola is one force powering the city, employing over 23,400 service members and civilians, this historical region has its own personality. Although many service members are here, there are non-military activities as well.

5) What is the zip code for NAS Pensacola?

The zip code for NAS Pensacola is 32508. Other nearby zip codes include 32502, 32506, 32507, and 32512.

NAS Pensacola is located in Florida’s panhandle, a region known for its white sandy beaches, emerald waters, and easy accessibility. Compared to high-profile beach destinations like Miami or Orlando, Pensacola offers a lower cost of living while still providing plenty of opportunities for sun, sand, and recreation. Nearby hotspots include Perdido Key and Orange Beach to the west, and the famous FLOR-A-BAMA bar on the Florida-Alabama line, known for events like the annual mullet toss and live country music. To the east are DestinPanama City Beach, Seaside, and other Gulf Coast destinations, making it easy to find a beach in almost any direction.

Getting around the area is relatively straightforward. I-10 serves as the main route, while U.S. Highway 98 runs parallel to the coast and can experience congestion during peak times. However, daily commutes rarely require traveling the full length of 98 unless living in Gulf Breeze.

NAS Pensacola and NAS Whiting Field, about 45 minutes apart, have overlapping communities, with many service members choosing to live halfway between the two bases. Further along the coast toward Destin and Fort Walton Beach, Eglin AFB and Hurlburt Field provide additional amenities and recreational opportunities, offering a change of pace from daily life while still within reach.
