Birmingham Air National Guard base is located at the Birmingham-Shuttleworth International Airport, a joint civil-military facility located five miles northeast of downtown Birmingham, AL. The base consists of approximately 147 acres and essential facilities to support the mission of the 117th Air Refueling Wing and its assigned units. The 117th ARW flies the Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker. Also, co-located at the base are facilities and units of the Alabama Army National Guard.

Nearby, about 15 miles to the northwest of Sector Headquarters is the USCG Aviation Training Center (ATC) Mobile.
