Surface Combat Systems Center (SCSC), known as "The Battle Group in the Sand," is co-located with NASA at the Wallops Flight Facility. The facility's advanced equipment can recreate the combat systems of operational cruisers, destroyers, amphibious, and carriers, allowing it to train personnel, maintain research and execute test exercises in a maritime environment.

Wallops Island is a six-square-mile island off the east coast of Virginia, part of the barrier islands that stretch along the eastern seaboard of the U.S. It is located in Accomack County, VA, just south of Chincoteague Island. About 55 miles northeast along the coast is Ocean City, MD, a bustling tourist destination that serves as a fun weekend getaway from time to time.

Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. This stretch of land offers mostly flat trails to run and bike while immersing yourself in the beautiful wildlife. And if you plan a trip in late July, you can enjoy the annual pony swim. 


Wallops Flight Facility. Wallops Flight Facility is the perfect place to learn about NASA's Earth Science program, the engineering process of sounding rockets, information on aircraft and scientific balloons, and experience the interactive Sun Earth Universe exhibit. The best part about this outing is that they offer free admission! 


Chincoteague to Assateague Boat Tour. There’s no better spot to pony watch to venture out on a kayak excursion than the Assateague Boat Tour. 


Chincoteague Island Library. Not only can you take advantage of the books, movies, computers, and internet at the Chincoteague Island Library, but it also hosts stories and craft time for kids and book clubs for adults. 

Assateague Lighthouse. The Assateague Lighthouse is a navigational aid for the Coast Guard, but the top remains accessible to the public for a panoramic view of the island.
