Though the Newport area is bustling with locals and tourists, it isn’t dense with military installations. Aside from Naval Station Newport, the Coast Guard is the only other military branch with a presence here about an hour away in Providence, Rhode Island.

Depending on where you’re driving from, whether it’s within Newport, heading south from Middleton or Portsmouth, or across the bridge from Jamestown, you’ll run into some commuter traffic during the week and potentially tourists during non-working hours.

Naval Station Newport is located on Aquidneck Island in Rhode Island. It’s about 20 minutes over the water from Jamestown and a 45-minute drive to Providence. On the island, you’ll notice a lot of local dining options, historical mansions (touring them is a must), beaches, and museums. No, you won’t find a Target on the island (the nearest one is 35 minutes away), but there is a Walmart and Naval Station Newport amenities.

The Newport Bridge connects Newport to Jamestown. However, most military families choose to settle on the island. The distance doesn’t appear far when you look at the map. However, with traffic, it’s normal for things to move a little slower. Plus, many find it easier to live near work and drive for the extras that the surrounding area has to offer.

Newport, Middletown, and Portsmouth are the most popular areas to search for homes.

Without multiple military installations nearby, service members and their families tend to look for homes in Newport right outside base while others extend their househunt to Middletown and Portsmouth. Though it has a slightly longer commute, the traffic in this area doesn’t compare with the impressive homes that will emerge in your search.

And if you’re looking to buy, Newport is a terrific place to invest. Not only is there security in renting out property near the war college with its consistent turnover rate, but the tourist industry can help alleviate any lapse in renters you might find.

Good news for military spouses looking for work, generally speaking-- the unemployment rate tends to be at or below the national average. While there are jobs available on the island, commuting further inland to Providence can open the door to more opportunities. For those looking to continue their education, there are smaller, private schools nearby Newport but the major universities (like Brown University and the University of Rhode Island) lie about an hour from NAVSTA Newport.

Plus, there’s lots of fun for military kids at Naval Station Newport. In addition to sailing and beaches, Newport offers lots of festivals and outdoor concerts to provide the whole family with entertainment (like the Newport Kite Festival!).
