Welcome to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base!

Located in east-central North Carolina, this Air Force base is front and center to the irresistible culture that gives this state its charm. Home to the 4th Fighter Wing and the 916th Air Refueling Wing, you can expect to hear jets zooming overhead. Thankfully, the local community is well aware and embraces their presence — the Wings over Wayne air show is a favorite around here.

With an extensive history dating back to WWII, the 4th Fighter Wing and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base has earned the nickname “Fourth but First.” This remarkable group is known for spearheading several operations throughout our nation’s history and receiving the Commander-In-Chief’s Installation Excellence Award in 2000, recognizing them for their quality in life and job enhancement.

The base falls under Air Combat Command at Langley AFB, Virginia, and deploys Airmen regularly in support of overseas contingency operations. The base is also home to the only two F-15E Formal Training Units in the United States Air Force.

But you don’t have to go far to make the most of life in North Carolina. Goldsboro is overflowing with charm. Proud of their food and military, this city isn’t short on enthusiasm. Look for festivals, farm tours, craft beers, boutiques, and local restaurants.

When finding a new home to settle into, you don’t have to look too far. Most military families keep it simple and choose between living on base or living in Goldsboro to create a little distance from work.

With eight major military installations in North Carolina, it’s easy to say the state is a favorite of the military. Though Raleigh National Guard is nearby (approximately an hour and a half), the remaining bases are a several hours’ drive from Seymour Johnson.

Are you a fan of the four seasons? Good news. Seymour Johnson has a front row seat for summer, fall, winter, and spring. You can look for hot, humid summers following a rainy, vibrant spring and freezing temps with a sprinkle of snow on occasion. And you’ll find ample opportunities here to take advantage of the great outdoors. From Civil War trails to the Wayne County paddle routes and the Goldsboro Bridge Battlefield, you can find something new to do outside every day.

The highest cause for concern in the area is hurricanes. It’s not uncommon for those stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB to feel the effects of the storms that grow in the Atlantic. Sometimes that means a few weeks of clouds and heavy rain and wind. Hurricane season is June through November. More information on hurricane preparedness can be found at Air Force Be Ready.

While the unemployment rate trends higher than the national average in Goldsboro and higher education nearby is limited, volunteer opportunities abound and family adventures are limitless.

The base is the hub for year ‘round outdoor adventure. It’s the backdrop for summer camping and fishing. Plus, it’s home to an archer range, skeet shooting, an Olympic swimming pool, trails, and a splash pad. When the weather is too cold to sit outside, the bowling alley and Sabre Cinema make for a fun adventure out of the house.
