Founded in 1917 in response to the U.S. joining WWI, Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) is the oldest active proving ground (a site used for testing and development) of the U.S. Army. The installation covers approximately 72,500 acres in Harford County, Maryland. With over 21,000 civilians, service members, and contractors as personnel on post, APG is one of Maryland’s largest employers. 

Today, APG hosts over 60 tenant organizations, including major Army commands involved in testing, communications systems, research, evaluation, and chemical/biological defense. APG sits in northeastern Maryland in Harford County, MD, along the western shore of Chesapeake Bay, roughly 25–30 miles northeast of Baltimore and about a 1.5–2 hour drive from Washington, D.C. The area blends suburban communities with small towns, waterfront locales, and convenient access to major highways like I-95 and MD 24.

North of APG, Aberdeen offers amenities like dining, shopping, medical services, and the Aberdeen Train Station with commuter services to Baltimore and Washington DC. South of APG, Edgewood has a suburban feel with access to Route 40 and I-95.

Aberdeen Proving Ground on-post housing has three neighborhoods with varying styles of housing from modern townhomes to historic homes. On-base housing amenities include lawn care, trash removal, 24/7 maintenance, and most utilities. Housing also has its own 24-hour fitness center with playrooms for kids, along with nearby walking trails and basketball courts. ABG housing is administered by Corvias.
