Measuring just over 109 acres, Fort Knox is a Kentucky city. Its community makes it more densely populated than a few of the surrounding towns and offers a slew of amenities that offer residents a fun place to call home.
But when you’re ready to drive through the gates and re-enter civilian life, there’s much to do. Louisville, just 45 minutes north of Fort Knox, is your playground. Though it’s widely known as home to the Kentucky Derby (start shopping for your hat now), there’s even more that this great city has to offer. There are enough sight-seeing destinations to keep you busy all day (the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, Kentucky Derby Museum, the Muhammed Ali Center, distilleries, ghost tours, and more!).
But it’s likely the family activities like the Louisville Zoo, Kentucky Kingdom, Louisville Nature Center, the Kentucky Science Center, and more that will make a drive to Louisville part of your normal routine.
Closer to post, you’ll find small towns and cities complete with charming downtown areas. Elizabethtown is the destination for a quick bite or a little shopping out on the town, as it’s no more than a 30-minute drive south of Fort Knox. However, if you’re looking to get away for a long weekend and explore a new area, Nashville, Tennessee, is less than three hours away and St. Louis is just over four!

Military families who choose to live off post settle into the surrounding small towns like Radcliff, Vine Grove, or Elizabethtown. Radcliff (closest to Fort Knox and about six minutes from the post) is one of the most heavily military veteran populated areas in the state. Vine Grove is the smallest of these at just 6,000 people.
