Outdoor enthusiasts will be in luck, as swimming, water sports, golf, and theme parks abound. The base has the typical facilities including a large Exchange, commissary, chapel, library, pools, bowling alley, golf course, and dining facilities. Base Location and Information
MacDill AFB is located within the city limits of Tampa, Florida, eight miles south of the central business district, at the tip of the Interbay Peninsula. The base has city district status because it is located within the city limits of Tampa. If you head east from Tampa, you will reach Brandon and Valrico, FL within 20 miles. Riverview and Lithia, FL are also within driving distance of the base.
Military Bases Near MacDill AFB
At MacDill, you’ll get used to hearing the term “joint,” with two military combatant commands located here: CENTCOM and SOCOM.
On the Florida peninsula itself, you’ll find Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard bases, as well as the Florida “Space Coast” with Cape Canaveral just hours away.
If it’s beach life you’re looking for, you won’t have to travel far for some of the most well known beaches in the country, as well as ports of call for well known cruise ship lines and the Keys about a half-day drive or quick flight away.

MacDill AFB lodging is managed by Air Force Inns. MacDill is a busy AMC location, so it’s recommended to make reservations well in advance. There are several popular areas that families enjoy near the base, but each has its own personality. One unique thing to note about this area is that a million dollar home can be situated next to a bungalow, especially within the city. Locals suggest waiting to look for housing until you can arrive to view neighborhoods and homes in person.

The Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is a U.S. based allowance determined by geographic duty location, pay grade, and dependency status. It provides uniformed service members compensation based on housing costs in local civilian housing markets when government quarters are not provided. The yearly average high temperature is 81° and the average low 65°. Tampa Bay is located in a hurricane zone, with the season running from June 1st until November 30th, so be sure to establish a hurricane/disaster kit along with a plan.
Be prepared by attending a hurricane brief the base offers at the beginning of the hurricane season and then pay attention to weather alerts issued by the base.
