Fort Novosel, formerly known as Fort Rucker, is a 63,000-acre Army post and is the headquarters for the U.S. Army Aviation Center for Excellence (USAACE) and USAG Fort Novosel. Fort Novosel prides itself on its ability to train, educate, and develop aviation leaders, enabling the soldiers on the ground to succeed at their very best.

As you can expect from a place focused on aviation, you’ll hear lots of activity overhead. The Apache, Chinook, Black Hawk, and Kiowa all call Fort Novosel home. While it’s most known for aviation and is home to the U.S. Army Aviation Museum, Fort Novosel is host to a variety of tenants, including the 164th Theater Airfield Operations Group, Air Traffic Services Command, Aviation Center Logistics Command, School of Army Aviation Medicine, U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center, U.S. Army Dental Clinic Command, U.S. Army Warrant Officer Career College, USAF 23rd Flying Training Squadron, along with many others.

Fort Novosel is located in the southeast corner of lower Alabama. It is approximately 40 minutes from the Florida state line and 45 minutes from the Georgia state line. The post has five entrances: Enterprise, Daleville, Ozark, Faulkner, and Newton. 

 

Newton is approximately 14 miles to the east, Enterprise is about 13 miles to the west, and Dothan lies around 25 miles southeast. 

 

When it comes to venturing outside the area, you’ll find a handful of fun weekend destinations. Pensacola is about two-and-a-half hours away, and Destin is right around the two-hour mark, as is Montgomery. Atlanta (if you’re looking for a big city getaway) is about three-and-a-half hours northeast.

Fort Novosel is fairly isolated from other military presences in the region. You won’t find any other installations within an hour's drive; however, there are a handful about two to three hours away.

Many military families stationed at Fort Novosel who forgo military housing settle in Enterprise or Ozark, about 20 minutes from the post. Enterprise offers more amenities and closer convenience to popular shopping than smaller towns closer to the post, like Daleville, and it is a shorter commute than Dothan (about 40 minutes southeast of the post).

Alabama is in the heart of the Deep South, and the weather matches its Southern tradition. High heat and humidity begin in late spring and run until about the end of September. The remaining fall and winter months are temperate. In the winter months, temperatures can easily be seen in the 70s. Alabama is classified as humid subtropical, with the northeast section of the state in the mountains usually much cooler.

Thunderstorms occur year-round but are most common in the spring and summer. Tornadoes do occur here, as the state sits in the region of the U.S. known as "tornado alley." The southern portion of the state (Fort Novosel area) can also see hurricanes.

There is a DoDEA school on-post at Fort Novosel,  which is great news for military families with young school-age kids living in military housing. Ellis D. Service members and their families moving to Fort Novosel may fall in love with the slower culture surrounding the post. Outdoor recreation opportunities are abundant. With many lakes (five Fort Novosel lakes) and streams nearby, as well as the proximity to the Gulf of Mexico, this region is a fisherman's paradise. You'll also find fishing, hunting, camping, and boating.
