Sector Southeast Alaska is located within the Tongass National Forest, the second largest rainforest in the world. This vast and challenging area of responsibility is home to critical resources, habitats, and communities reliant on maritime infrastructure, safety, and security. The region’s unique environment and natural beauty bring nearly 2 million cruise ship visitors on more than 650 annual cruise arrivals. Southeast Alaska’s fisheries also generate more than $130 million in revenue each year.

Juneau is a rather unusual place because there are no roads connecting the city to the rest of Alaska or to the rest of North America (although ferry service is available for cars). The absence of a road network is due to the extremely rugged terrain surrounding the city. This makes Juneau an island city in terms of transportation, since all goods coming in and out must go by plane or boat, even though the city is located on the Alaskan mainland.
