Charleston AFB home to the 437th Airlift Wing which operates the C-17 Globemaster III strategic airlift aircraft. Augmenting the 437th and co-located there is the 315th Airlift Wing of the AF Reserve. A joint civil-military airport, Charleston AFB shares runways with Charleston Int Airport. USAF controlled, Charleston AFB has merged with Naval Weapons Station Charleston and is now known as Joint Base Charleston.

The Charleston Naval Weapons station has merged with Charleston AFB to create USAF controlled Joint Base Charleston. The Weapons Station stores munitions and nuclear aerial bombs for deck-based aircraft. The facility also supports the Maritime Pre-positioning Force Program and serves as a Homeport for ships, as directed by the Chief of Naval Operations and Commander, Military Sealift Command.

Charleston, SC is home to the USCG Coast Guard Sector Charleston. The Base is located at the south-most tip of Charleston with access to both the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. As a seagoing port, Coast Guard Charleston's location puts it in a key position for seagoing missions as well as shore based activities. The base measures just over 8 acres and lies within the Historic District of the City of Charleston.

McEntire Joint National Guard Base is a military airport owned by the U.S. Air Force and affiliated with the South Carolina Air National Guard. The National Guard's 169th Fighter Wing is the primary unit located there.

Parris Island Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) is used for the training of enlisted Marines. Male recruits living east of the Mississippi River and female recruits from all over the United States report to the depot to receive their initial training. Around 19,000 recruits are trained at Parris Island MCRD each year.
