President Andrew Jackson is the namesake of the military facility initially known as Camp Jackson. Camp Jackson was established in 1917 as part of the WWI war effort as an infantry training center, and later served as a training site for the South Carolina National Guard.

For its time, the base construction was an impressive feat, not only because of the modern amenities on base but because the construction also included the installation of a water supply and distribution system, a sewage system, an electrical system, telephone/telegraph lines, roads, and railroad tracks.

After contributing to WWII missions, Fort Jackson became a replacement training center. During the Korean War, the 8th and 31st Infantry Divisions trained on base. In 1973, Fort Jackson was appointed as a U.S. Army Training Center. Later in 1995, Fort Jackson was designated as the site for current training facilities and schools.  Fort Jackson’s motto, “Victory Starts Here,” remains in place today.

Military families often choose to live in Columbia as their home city if they plan to live off base, but other choices include Elgin, Blythewood, and Hopkins.

Columbia is popular because of the urban/suburban amenities throughout the city, including the industries that thrive on the college culture downtown. Single family homes are found on the edges of downtown, as there is more space; but directly downtown, loft living, condos, and townhouses are available in addition to smaller, older single family homes.

Also between a 20-25 minute drive, Elgin and Hopkins have smaller populations and offer rural living attractions for those who prefer a slower pace with a few suburban amenities sprinkled in.
