Marine Safety Unit (MSU) Chicago, part of the USCG's 9th District and Sector Lake Michigan, is responsible for executing the Coast Guard’s Port Safety and Security, Marine Environmental Protection, and Commercial Vessel Safety missions under the sponsorship of the Department of Homeland Security. MSU Chicago serves an active network of domestic and international maritime interests covering the Lake Michigan shorelines of Illinois and Indiana, as well as 177 miles of the Illinois River System.

With fifteen service schools, support and tenant commands, and the Navy's only Recruit Training Command or "boot camp", there are more than 25,000 military and civilian personnel living, working, and training at Great Lakes making it the Navy’s largest training facility.

The Rock Island Arsenal is the largest government-owned weapons manufacturing arsenal in the western world. It is an active U.S. Army factory which manufactures ordnance and equipment for the Armed Forces.
