Measuring just over 109 acres, Fort Knox is a Kentucky city. Its community makes it more densely populated than a few of the surrounding towns and offers a slew of amenities that offer residents a fun place to call home. 

 

Upon exiting the gates to re-enter civilian life, there are numerous activities to explore. Located just 45 minutes north of Fort Knox, Louisville offers a variety of attractions. Known primarily as the home of the Kentucky Derby, the city provides much more in terms of cultural and recreational activities. Sightseeing options are abundant, including the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, Kentucky Derby Museum, the Muhammad Ali Center, distilleries, and ghost tours.

Additionally, family-oriented destinations such as the Louisville Zoo, Kentucky Kingdom, Louisville Nature Center, and the Kentucky Science Center are likely to make visits to Louisville a regular occurrence.

 

Closer to post are small towns and cities, complete with charming downtown areas. Elizabethtown is the destination for a quick bite or a little shopping out on the town, as it’s no more than a 30-minute drive south of Fort Knox. However, for those looking to get away for a long weekend and explore a new area, Nashville, Tennessee, is less than three hours away and St. Louis is just over four.

Military families who choose to live off post settle into the surrounding small towns like Radcliff, Vine Grove, or Elizabethtown. Radcliff (closest to Fort Knox and about six minutes from the post) is one of the most heavily military veteran populated areas in the state. Vine Grove is the smallest of these at just 6,000 people.
