Fort Campbell, Kentucky, is the home of the Army’s 101st Airborne Division, aka “The Screaming Eagles.” It's also the home of the 5th Special Forces Group, the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, and more. Ft. Campbell is known for the “ten toughest days in the Army” at the Sabalauski Air Assault School.

Fort Campbell is one of the largest military installations in the U.S. It covers over 106,700 acres of land and is home to the most deployed contingency forces. A large military retiree community resides in the area, bringing the total population of active duty, civilians, retirees, and family members to over 240,000. Nearby military installations include Fort Knox and Blue Grass Army Depot, each within a few hours’ drive to the northwest.

Fort Campbell is about 60 miles northeast of Nashville, connected by I-24. The nearest towns to Fort Campbell are Clarksville (TN), Oak Grove (KY), and Hopkinsville (KY). Fort Campbell is located in four different counties: Trigg and Christian in Kentucky and Stewart and Montgomery in Tennessee.

It was designed with today's military families in mind and is located conveniently near post services, with easy access to the commissary, PX, playgrounds, and more. Rain, snow, sun, humidity? Newcomers should be prepared for it all! Fort Campbell's summers are hot and muggy, and winter weather is cold and wet. 


Winter may bring some snow, with the area averaging 6 inches of snow per year. January is the most dreary month, with overcast skies about 54% of the time. July and August are the hottest months. Spring and summer storms are common, along with increasing humidity. The growing season can extend into November, but fall lovers will rejoice as this area's mild temperatures and mostly sunny days are a feature of autumn.

Fort Campbell Area Schools

Families living on Fort Campbell should note that DODEA runs the schools. The district includes four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. 

The system’s four elementary schools serve approximately 2,500 students in Pre-K through Fifth, while the middle and high schools have about 500 students each. Fort Campbell High School students can earn dual credit through a partnership with Austin Peay State University.

Families living off post will be covered by the county where they reside. The area also has eleven private schools, including non-sectarian, college prep, and religiously affiliated schools. Homeschoolers will need to understand the laws of the state where they live, as there are significant differences in Kentucky and Tennessee homeschooling regulations.
