Naval Support Activity Northwest Annex coordinates the provision of shore activity support to tenant commands and operational forces of the United States and its allies as required. The base also maintains and operates the largest small-arms range facilities in the United States Mid-Atlantic Naval Region. 

NSA Northwest Annex started as the Naval Radio Station in 1955 as a receiving facility for naval activities in the Norfolk area. Eventually, it became a part of the Naval Security Group Activity Northwest, and today is the NSA HR Northwest Annex hosting a variety of tenant commands.

NSA Northwest Annex sits in rural southern Chesapeake, Virginia, where the state borders North Carolina. The Annex is about 40 miles southwest of Virginia Beach, 35 miles south of Norfolk and Portsmouth, and 35 miles north of Elizabeth City, NC. Chesapeake City Park: This 90-acre park offers endless amenities including walking loops, playgrounds, a skate park, and dog parks. This beautiful park is also the backdrop for community events like the Chesapeake Park Whisper Concert Series and more.

Battlefield Park: As a tribute to the revolutionary war’s Battle of Great Bridge, this historical park features an interpretive pathway and battle reenactments, in addition to picnic and pier areas.

Chesapeake Arboretum: This 51-acre park is known as “Virginia Treasure” and features bridges, hiking trails, lake, farm house, as well as a plant nursery and greenhouse.

Chilled Ponds Ice Sports Complex: This 90,000 square-foot ice skating sports complex is open to the public and features skating lessons or leisure. It’s also the training ground for the Norfolk Admirals.

Children’s Museum of Virginia: This family destination is worth the drive to Portsmouth for a great day trip. It’s the largest museum for children in Virginia, with two floors of hands-on exhibits and a planetarium.

Virginia Zoo: Who doesn’t love a zoo? There are 700 animals to check out and a one-acre playground to meet new friends and picnic. 

Virginia Aquarium: Hot days call for relief, which you can find while touring the 800,000 gallon aquarium. Exhibits include hands-on learning, a nature path, and a marshland replica.
