Welcome to Langley Air Force Base!
Joint Base Langley-Eustis (JBLE) was created by combining the Army's Fort Eustis with Langley AFB. Located in Newport News, Virginia, in the area known as Hampton Roads, this joint base is unlike other joint bases in that the two components are geographically separated by 17 miles.
Under the 2005 Base Realignment, Allocation and Closure (BRAC) Act, JBLE falls under the responsibility of the Air Force 633d Air Base Wing as Joint Base Langley-Eustis.
The Fort Eustis section of JBLE is about 17 miles north of the Langley section. Nearby cities include Yorktown, Williamsburg, Hampton, and Poquoson, VA. Also just north of JBLE is the Naval Weapons Station Yorktown. The Air Force is the lead agency for JBLE. The military presence in Hampton Roads is the largest concentration of military personnel outside the Pentagon.

Joint Base Langley-Eustis is the home of Headquarters Air Combat Command (ACC); 633d Air Base Wing; the 1st Fighter Wing; 363rd ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance) Wing; 480th ISR Wing; and other mission partners. The F-22 Raptor is based at Joint Base Langley-Eustis through the 149th Fighter Squadron. The 1st Fighter Wing is the oldest wing in the Air Force and continues its tradition of air dominance which began in WWI.
The missions of the 633d Air Base Wing, the host wing, is to provide mission-ready expeditionary Airmen to combatant commanders in support of joint and combined operations worldwide.

Follow the Eastern Seaboard 200 miles south from Washington D.C., and you’ll land in the metropolitan area of Hampton Roads, Virginia. In the coastal plains of the Tidewater region you’ll find seven bustling cities: Norfolk, Newport News, Hampton, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach.

This area is brimming with nautical and military history, and if you're anticipating a PCS move to Langley AFB, you’ll feel right at home with the military-friendly vibe of this expansive area. Military bases in Hampton Roads are either located “Southside” in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area or “on the peninsula” across the waterway. Langley AFB is “on the peninsula.”

Although Fort Eustis and Langley AFB stand physically apart, newcomers are often initially confused by the joint base nomenclature. Fort Eustis is in Newport News which is near the James River, while Langley AFB is 17 miles south in Hampton.
The dominance of waterways poses an intense traffic situation dictated by the The Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (HRBT) system. When heading to the southern side of Hampton Roads (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, etc. ), you’ll encounter the routine use of a four-tunnel system and the routine traffic back-ups people endure in the area. With the tunnels comes tariffs, and daily commutes can add to the budget that has to be considered when choosing your new home. Specifically, the City of Portsmouth earns money from the use of the Downtown and Midtown Tunnels connecting Portsmouth and Norfolk. Here you can expect to either purchase an EZ Pass or receive an electronic bill at your house. However, the only other tunnel option that requires a toll is the privately owned Chesapeake Bay Bridge which connects Virginia Beach to the Eastern Shore.
Langley AFB lies north of many military bases in the region that require bridge and tunnel commute, so unless you choose to live across the water, everyday back-ups may be avoided by living very close to base, but recreational or shopping adventures will be affected by the prevalence of traffic congestion.

Langley Family Housing is made up of five distinct communities encompassing 1,430 new, renovated, and historic single-family, duplex, fourplex, and six-plex homes. Virginia is known for its woodsy feel. Houses in and around the Peninsula are tucked amidst mature trees with spacious yards and neighbors who are avid gardeners. Many homes have architectural features in keeping with the early American feel of this historic location, such as lantern lighting, classic shutters, and even interior wood beams from colonial barns.
Off base, you’ll find plenty of military neighbors on the peninsula. The Army and Air Force make up the majority, but all branches are represented in Hampton Roads in one way or another, with the huge Norfolk Naval Base just across the water.
Langley AFB is located in the city of Hampton, and you may choose to start your house hunting search right outside the gates. One popular area is the Fox Hill community of Hampton. From there, explore the abundance of local museums, historical sites, and amusement park attractions. After spending time out and about, return home for a refreshing walk to the Grandview Nature Preserve and local beach. Like many of the Peninsula neighborhoods, Fox Hill offers a convenient commute to Langley.
Langley AFB is about a 20-25 minute drive to Newport News, depending on time of day. The city can be challenging when seeking comfortable neighborhoods and schools, but military members have reviewed and enjoyed the Carriage Hills and Courtney Trace neighborhoods. On the peninsula, housing tends to be most affordable near Fort Eustis.
Military families often settle in the nearby cities of Williamsburg or Yorktown that offer more housing options, including plenty of homes with colonial style architecture. However, the colonial charm and amenities in these cities tend to bump up price points of off base housing.
In nearby Poquoson, the neighborhood population enjoys privacy and larger land lots.
Keep in mind, to avoid daily traffic tie ups, it's easiest to live and work on the peninsula instead of commuting across a bridge or tunnel down to the Southside.

If you enjoy four distinct seasons, you’re in luck with an assignment to the Hampton Roads area. Hot and humid during the summer months, the area also gets a bit of snowfall during winter, so keep your winter gear handy. During the summer months, the hottest days are typically in July with an average high of 88 degrees. From December to March, the coldest months, the high temperature averages about 48 degrees in late January. Lows in the winter hit around 32 degrees, though you'll also see colder temps, especially near the water.
Langley AFB residents should be prepared for hurricane activity during June through November. Hurricane preparedness is a way of life in the region, and there are plenty of resources on and off base to fight against flooding and water damage.

Langley AFB Area Schools

For families living on base at Langley AFB, there are two school systems. Main base housing residents attend Hampton City Schools, which has 36 schools and approximately 23,000 students. For the main base there is one elementary, one middle, and one high school serving as primary feeder schools.
Children living in the Bethel Manor housing area attend York County Schools, (which has 19 schools and approximately 13,000 students). Bethel Manor residents are serviced by two elementary, two middle and two high schools, depending on where you live in Bethel Manor.
Other nearby public school systems include Poquoson City Public Schools, Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools, and York County School Division.

Things to Do Near Langley AFB

Fort Monroe: Learn about our nation's history with a tour of the Fort Monroe National Monument and Casemate museum. The fort's history spans from the beginnings of the U.S. into the 21st century.
Sandy Bottom Nature Park: With a lake and trails, the 456-acre nature preserve is just minutes from the base.
Virginia Air & Space Center: Located in Hampton, the Virginia Air & Space Science Center features interactive aviation exhibits, historic aircraft, a hands-on space exploration gallery, unique space flight artifacts, and more. The Center is home to the Apollo 12 Command Module and the Orion PA-1 Test Vehicle.
Buckroe Beach: On the peninsula side of the water, Buckroe Beach borders the Chesapeake Bay and is manned with lifeguards from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Plan your day at the beach and make use of the equipment rentals (jet skis, paddleboards, and more) and concessions.
Busch Gardens: The well known theme park is located in nearby Williamsburg. Check with ITT for discounts for your time at Busch Gardens Williamsburg Theme Park & Water Park.
Colonial Williamsburg: During your time at Langley, you'll want to visit Colonial Williamsburg at least once! Step back in time and visit the historical shops, homes, and streets of early America.
Weekend and day trips: Being stationed at Langley AFB has its perks! Some places to visit on an easy day trip or long weekend include Virginia Beach, Shenandoah National Park, Richmond, North Carolina's Outer Banks, Washington, D.C., and many more destinations along the Eastern Seaboard.
