Military housing at Kirtland AFB is privatized.  Housing consists of single-family homes and three and four bedroom duplex units located in seven neighborhoods or villages, each within a 5-minute walk to common spaces. Kirtland AFB is located in southeast Albuquerque, NM, between the Sandia and Manzano mountain ranges. The city center of Albuquerque is only around 6 miles from the base. The city of Rio Rancho is nearby, north of the base, and the cities of Tijeras and Edgewood are nearby to the east.
