Fort Leavenworth has been in operation for over 170 years, making it the oldest active U.S. Army post west of the Mississippi River. Fort Leavenworth is historically known as the "Intellectual Center of the Army" and is home to the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center.
The Command and General Staff College (CGSC) educates, trains, and develops leaders for Unified Land Operations in a Joint, Interagency, Intergovernmental, and Multinational operational environment. Fort Leavenworth also accommodates the Department of Defense's United States Disciplinary Barracks, a federal penitentiary.
Similar to neighboring military installations in the area, Fort Leavenworth is tied to the American westward expansion during the 1800s. Fort Leavenworth was primarily established as a depot to protect travelers on the Santa Fe Trail and to maintain peace between settlers and Native Americans. General Henry Leavenworth, a veteran of the War of 1812, is credited with establishing the fort in 1827.
Buffalo Soldier Monument
Fort Leavenworth contributed to the Civil War efforts while preparing to defend against Confederate forces. After the war ended in 1866, four African-American regiments were formed under the 10th Cavalry. Colonel Benjamin Grierso commanded the group who are better known today as the Buffalo Soldiers.
The first iteration of the United States Disciplinary Barracks (USDB) was erected in 1875 and housed inmates until 2002 when a new compound was built.
Today’s infantry men and women have a lineage that begins at Fort Leavenworth via General William T. Sherman in 1881 when he created the School of Application for Cavalry and Infantry. Graduates include Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar N. Bradley, and George S. Patton. In 1946, the program’s name was changed to the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the tradition of command education continues today.

Fort Leavenworth has impressive views of the Missouri River and sits on the border between Kansas and Missouri. The surrounding towns, especially Leavenworth, are military friendly and there’s a strong camaraderie between the residents and the military families who cycle through the school. Other nearby towns include Lansing, Shawnee and Basehor, Kansas, and Weston and Platte city, Missouri.

Although many families live on base due to the short nature of the tour, all are happy with the affordability of the area, which is nearly 20% less than the U.S. average.
The base features historical sites, including the prestigious Buffalo Soldier monument in addition to an esteemed museum that showcases exhibits that look and feel similar to those found in museums located in much larger cities. Families also take advantage of an abundance of outdoor activities on base that includes walking trails, playgrounds, picnic areas. About 20 minutes from Fort Leavenworth is a retail hub named Zona Rosa. It is an outlet mall that not only offers shopping but space for gatherings, restaurants, and various entertainment such as street fairs and farmers markets.
Kansas City, Missouri, is about a 45-minute drive and is the destination military families and single service members prefer for larger city amenities including expanded shopping in the Country Club Plaza, dining and nightlife in Westport, and professional sporting teams such as the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals.
