POM operates the prestigious Home of the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center. The academic regimen at DLIFLC is rigorous. An average school day covers two weeks of a regular college language curriculum, and the typical language course is the equivalent of over five years of college language training. POM’s surrounding cities and Monterey Bay are major tourist draws all year long. The peninsula isn’t large, and the infrastructure reflects the city’s population, except when significant events such as the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro Am golf tournament, the Pebble Beach Food and Wine event, and the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance are on the schedule. Peninsula travel and parking become difficult with the influx of visitors.
The city of Seaside is about two miles north of POM, and if you continue even further north, you will reach Marina, about seven miles away from the base. Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, and Carmel are all within a four-mile radius of POM.

The Parks at Monterey Bay is the property management company for Pinnacle Family Housing. The Parks is a military housing community comprised of La Mesa Village (Monterey) and Fort Ord Village (Seaside). The Parks serves the Naval Postgraduate School and POM and offers two-, three-, four-, and five-bedroom homes.
