Though you’ll become well acquainted with the city, the area that’s considered “San Diego” extends beyond the downtown area. It follows the California coast from Mexico to Orange county and includes mountain ranges, national and state parks, desert, and popular areas like downtown San Diego, Chula Vista, La Jolla, Escondido, and Carlsbad. San Diego is only 20 miles north of Tijuana, Mexico, and you’ll immediately notice the Mexican influence on culture, music, food, and activities.

If you love the outdoors, you’ll feel right at home with plenty of opportunities for surfing, hiking, or even just a walk along the beach. Be prepared for a higher cost of living than you may be used to, as well as dealing with regular traffic snarls. Though the Coronado ferry runs to the Broadway Pier and the San Diego Convention Center from Coronado, a car probably serves as better transportation for daily commutes. But the ferry makes a great transportation option for relaxed days or fun nights in the city if you live on Coronado and don’t want to drive. Save your car for day trips and weekend getaways to the Temecula wineries, Disneyland, Big Bear Lake, Hollywood, or Joshua Tree National Park!

Naval Amphibious Base (NAB) Coronado is located on Silver Strand, CA, a narrow strip of land that connects what is known as Coronado Island, where North Island NAS is located, to the city of Imperial Beach, CA. A short drive from Coronado NAB will take you east across the bay to San Diego and the San Diego Naval Base. Once across the bay, National City and Chula Vista are south and slightly east by about 8 and 11 miles distance. If you go east and slightly north, you will pass by the cities of Lemon Grove and La Mesa, eventually reaching El Cajon, CA at about 20 miles distance.

Military Bases Near NAB Coronado
Naval Amphibious Base Coronado is located on the Coronado peninsula off downtown San Diego. The bridge to downtown takes you directly to Naval Base San Diego. But if you travel south across Silver Strand State Beach, you’ll be in Imperial Beach and back on the mainland.
With two main bases (Naval Amphibious Base Coronado and Naval Air Station Coronado) and many other training areas located on Coronado, the peninsula is primarily military. The ferry, though might not be ideal for daily commutes, makes a great transportation option for relaxed days or fun nights if you live on Coronado and don’t want to drive.
Naval Amphibious Base Coronado and Naval Base Coronado are different. NAB Coronado is part of the larger Naval Base Coronado which consists of eight Navy installations:
- Naval Air Station North Island, Coronado (NASNI)
- Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado (NAB)
- Naval Outlying Landing Field
- Imperial Beach (NOLF IB)
- Naval Auxiliary Landing Field

You won’t find the traditional four seasons in San Diego that you’d find at many other duty stations in the U.S. Though you’ll notice the temperature fluctuate throughout the year, there aren’t extreme changes in weather. You’ll find that many people consider swimsuits appropriate attire during the summer months, and the winter is justification to wear jeans and a jacket for a few months.
Your biggest concern here is wildfires. The fall, when the winds pick up and the winter rain hasn’t wet the earth left dry from summer, is considered wildfire season. And you shouldn’t feel surprised to feel an earthquake or two as well. Thousands occur every year. Some cause damage, but you’ll hardly feel most of them.
