Fort Leonard Wood and the U.S. Army Maneuver Support Center (MANSCEN) is the home of the U.S. Army Engineer, Military Police and Chemical Corps Schools, the Third BCTB, and Joint Training Detachments from the U.S. Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force. The post is commonly referred to as "Fort Lost in the Woods" amongst soldiers and visitors due to its remoteness and distance from a major city. Its location provides for field training in rugged terrain with extremes heat, cold, wet, and dry.

Also located at Whiteman as a tenant wing is the 442d Fighter Wing (442 FW), an Air Combat Command-gained unit of the Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC), operating the A-10 Thunderbolt II.
