Welcome to Fort Gordon
Fort Gordon, located near Augusta, Georgia, is an Army installation that is home to the United States Army Cyber Center of Excellence, Signal and Cyber Regiments, and the National Security Agency (NSA Georgia). A significant number of service members stationed at Fort Gordon attend the Advanced Individual Training for the Signal Corps. Fort Gordon also supports the 513th Military Intelligence Brigade.
Dating back to 1917, Camp Gordon, as it was originally known, has consistently trained soldiers and contributed intelligence capabilities to all American war efforts. However, Camp Gordon was officially activated to provide infantry and armor training during World War II.
Camp Gordon also operated disciplinary barracks and a prisoner of war camp housing German and Italian soldiers. After the war, and a close call with closure, Camp Gordon’s forces returned to establish the Signal Corps Training Center in 1948. Later that year, it established military police schooling.
During the 1950s, Camp Gordon was the center of several training outfits:
- The Military Government Training for the Army
- The Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory
- The 51st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Brigade
- The Army’s Signal Officer Candidate School
The Civil Affairs School arrived in 1955. Camp Gordon became a permanent Army installation in 1956 and designated as Fort Gordon. The U.S. Army Training Center (Basic) began in 1957. Signal Corps training grew in capacity during the 1960s. In addition, Fort Gordon trained military police and infantrymen headed to Vietnam. The Army consolidated all communications training at Fort Gordon in 1974. It later added the Army’s Computer Science School, sparking significant overall growth of Fort Gordon.
During the 1990s, Fort Gordon’s Mobilization Command headed to Operation Desert Shield-Desert Storm. Since then, it has continued to provide cyber technology for today’s war efforts in Southeast Asia and other global interests.

Living in Augusta
Housing is affordable, but Augusta tends to draw buyers and renters without families because the older homes are smaller, and the public school system isn’t as highly ranked as neighboring Evans. Augusta has all the amenities needed, but those who live there may need to head to larger cities for specialty shopping and special-occasion dining.
Living in Evans
Most of Evans is considered the newer area surrounding Fort Gordon. Families seek this city because the homes and properties are generally larger, they prefer the school system, and there are sufficient lifestyle activities. Expect commute time to Fort Gordon from Evans to be about 30-40 minutes during the heaviest traffic.
Living in Groveton
Groveton is the closest city to Fort Gordon, at about a 15-minute drive during peak commute times. Groveton is small and rural, and most residents hope to keep it that way. However, the expanding footprint of Fort Gordon, which currently supports a total population of about 80,000, is putting pressure on the city to accommodate incoming families.
