Fort Lewis: A Brief Overview

Established nearly 100 years ago in Washington, Fort Lewis, which is now known as Joint Base Lewis-McChord or JBLM for short, has grown exponentially since its inception. Positioned in the Pacific Northwest, members of this military establishment have historically supported Japan and South Korea due to their proximity to these neighboring nations.  The original camp, which consisted of just 37,000 men during World War I, was also an important asset during the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars.
Known as one of the most sought-after duty stations, JBLM is also referred to as the Army "power base" west of the Rockies, which is also where the Air Force conducts humanitarian and combat flights.

Fort Lewis: Year-round Perks

The endless natural beauty and the temperate climate are among the major benefits of living near JBLM, especially if you like the rain! Washington is one of the few states in the union that boasts an equal mixture of all four seasons, and if you're a fan of the outdoors, the number of ideal hiking and camping locations scattered across the countryside are perfect for the whole family. The winters, although set beautifully against a backdrop of the stunning Mount Ranier, are typically mild as well, making it an ideal year-long experience. Much closer to home, JBLM takes full advantage of this seasonal perk by hosting community building events, such as outdoor sporting exercises, boating trips on the marina and fort-wide festivals that everyone is invited to.

Fort Lewis: Nearby Schools

With 20 schools situated in JBLM, families will have no trouble finding the right educational facility for their children. There are eight preschools, four elementary schools, four public schools and four private schools that make up the Clover Park School District, where more than 12,000 students are enrolled. Furthermore, the state of Washington is home to internationally accredited higher education facilities, such as the Universityof Washington, Washington State University and Seattle University.

Fort Lewis: Population and Local Economy

Washington does not follow an income tax model, making it one of nine states in the union that doesn't attribute an imposed cost of living. On top of these innate savings for living at JBLM, the base itself is the second largest employer in the entire state, making it a prime location for retired service members and civilians to find work close to home.
